Forage and Cook Wild Mushrooms by Mountain Stream
Foraging wild mushrooms and cooking them over a fire next to a babbling mountain stream is such a peaceful thing to do, and its one of my favorite kind of videos to make. Aaron Hilliard, mushroom expert and mycology educator, takes us on a journey i the lush Olympic Mountains to forage for wild mushrooms like Hedgehogs (Hydnum umbilicatum), Winter Chanterelles (Craterellus tubaeformis), Golden Chanterelles (Cantharellus formosus), Pig’s Ears (Gomphus clavatus), Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus pulminarius), Late Fall Oyster Mushrooms (Sarcomyxa serotina), and more. Then tops its all off by building a small fire at the edge of a beautiful creek deep in the woods and cooks a nice chunk of meat on a cast iron skillet with some Chanterelles to eat. This is an edutainment piece- mushroom identification and some ASMR mixed in there for a relaxing and informative video. If you’d like to dive a little deeper you can sign up for the 3 part intro to mycology course at the Olympic College in Bremerton. This is a non-credit class for personal enrichment. Aaron instructs the class in person, which covers what fungi is, how it grows, and its relationship to the world around it. The second class covers introduction to wild mushrooms and mushroom identification, and the third class goes over fungi cultivation and the history of mycological sciences and taxonomy. There is usually a foray into the woods for students who have attended the 3 classes. The classes are only offered in person right now, but they may be made into an online version soon.
