Energy storage systems are devices that catch electricity, store it as another kind of energy such as chemical, thermal, or mechanical energy, and then release it when needed. One example is lithium-ion batteries. Although energy storage is never completely efficient—some energy is always wasted in the conversion and retrieval processes—storage allows for the flexible use of energy at times other than when it was generated. As a result, storage can improve system efficiency and resilience while also improving power quality by matching supply and demand.
